The novel Yellowface by R.F. Kuang follows June Hayward, a mediocre white author, who steals the finished manuscript of her recently deceased, critically acclaimed Asian American friend, Athena Liu. June publishes the manuscript as her own under the racially ambiguous name "Juniper Song," a decision that launches her to literary fame but traps her in a cycle of guilt, paranoia, and cultural appropriation. As June navigates the pressures of her newfound success and the scrutiny of the literary world, she desperately tries to keep her secret buried while grappling with the ethical and racial implications of her theft.
