Ocean Vuong's novel, The Emperor of Gladness, centers on the unlikely friendship between nineteen-year-old Hai, a college dropout and substance abuser, and Grazina, an elderly Lithuanian widow with dementia. The two meet when Grazina intervenes to stop Hai from ending his life on a bridge in the desolate, post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut. Hai becomes Grazina's caretaker, and their unconventional bond, along with his community of co-workers at a fast-food restaurant, provides him with a sense of chosen family and a second chance.
