Set in the summer of 1932, “This Tender Land” follows the journey of four orphans escaping from the Lincoln Indian Training School in Minnesota. The story is narrated by Odie O’Banion, a 12-year-old orphan who, along with his older brother Albert, his best friend Mose (a young Sioux boy), and a newly orphaned little girl named Emmy, embarks on a life-changing canoe trip down the Minnesota River. Their goal is to reach St. Louis, where they hope to find a new home and a sense of belonging. Along the way, they encounter a diverse cast of characters, each contributing to their understanding of the world and themselves. As they navigate the challenges of their journey, the children grapple with questions of faith, identity, and the true meaning of family.
