“I Got a Lust for Life”: The Unique Words and Sounds of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan with The University of Toledo’s English Department and The Roger Ray Institute for the Humanities.

Tyehimba Jess is a storyteller and engaging performer whose work has focused on music, biography, and African-American history. A Detroit native and 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Jess will read from Olio, his award-winning collection of poetry that weaves together sonnet, song, and narrative to examine the lives of mostly unrecorded, African American performers directly before and after the Civil War up to World War I. A book signing will follow in the McMaster Lobby.

“I Got a Lust for Life”: The Unique Words and Sounds of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan is a free, one-day, public program that includes panels, musical performances, and literary readings in Toledo and Detroit. It explores the synergies between, and the distinct languages of, northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan across music genres and storytelling practices. This program is in collaboration with The University of Toledo’s English Department and The Roger Ray Institute for the Humanities. Please visit The Roger Ray Institute for the Humanities for more event information.
