What is Discord?

Simply put, Discord is a communications platform. It’s a chat room, a message board, a forum, a video and audio-conferencing program, all rolled into one. We’re making use of it for our Dungeons & Dragons Club so that we can answer more questions outside of our scheduled sessions and spend more time playing when the time comes, as well as a million other reasons. Our Discord is owned and moderated by TLCPL Teen Librarians to ensure adherence with TLCPL’s values. We hope to see you there!

What is Dungeons & Dragons?

Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop fantasy roleplaying game where a group of individuals work together to go on an epic adventure. Every D&D game is run by a Dungeon Master (DM) who runs the plot and make calls on rules (like a referee). They create and describe the adventure that the adventurers go on, giving them goals to work on, and rewards players for doing them. The goal of D&D isn’t necessarily to beat the DM or kill the other characters: the goal is to hang out and play by collaborative storytelling while exploring the world that the DM has created.

Before you can play D&D...

Are you interested in playing? Before you can do so, you would have to create your character for Dungeons & Dragons, Fifth Edition (5e). You can do this by going to DNDBeyond.com, or by printing a character sheet and using the Player's Handbook. Sometimes DMs have specific requests or rules regarding character creation, so it’s always best to consult them when creating a character. If you'd like to ask questions in advance of the program dates, you can contact one of our DMs via email or Discord!

I have a character, now what?

If you are ready to join a campaign and you have been registered: congratulations! The Dungeon Master will take care of the rest of the preparation for the session. Please note that one cannot simply walk into a game (also called a campaign) that is already in progress. It's best if you’re able to commit to the whole series, and why wouldn’t you want to? It’s an adventure! If you think you’ll only be able to join for certain dates, let us know (using the email addresses above). That way the DM may be able to work you into or out of the story. If you're late to the party and there aren’t any registration spots available, let us know and we’ll add you to a waitlist.
