A Community Panel Discussion

In partnership with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Toledo Museum of Art and Welcome TLC, you are invited to a panel discussion on Stan Douglas' science-fiction inspired film Doppelgänger, moderated by Jessica Hong, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Doppelgänger employs science fiction as a prompt to understand the temporal intersections and simultaneous realities that exist in our present. The film center on Alice, an astronaut, who embarks on a solitary mission to space. Upon Alice’s return, two narratives begin to unfold: one as benevolent earthly citizen and another as a potentially dangerous alien; alludes to the heightened debates around citizenship and homelands, such as the reception of immigrants and refugees, as well as the systemic exclusion and oppression of marginal communities. Joining the panel discussion are community leaders who will be able to provide valuable insight and perspective around the films themes and how it fits across the broader community. We look forward to highlighting local voices and narratives on this salient topic, which speaks to the expansive, national, and global themes this film explores. The panelists include:
