TSA exchange student, Anita Teixeira Santana, has captioned an award-winning documentary about her family in her home country of Brazil.
Rosa: Uma História Brasileira (A Brazilian Story) was directed and produced by Luiz Eduardo Jorge and released in 2009 and is now captioned by Toledo School of the Arts exchange student Anita Teixeira Santana. This 24-minute documentary short film won 3 FestCine awards, including best screenplay and two best short-film awards. It tells the story of Anita's grandmother Rosemary, her family, and her home country of Brazil. During the military dictatorship in Brazil, Rosemary and her family flee to a small village in the country's interior. Later, Rosemary adopts the false name Rosa. In the village of Pariconha, Rosa teaches the peasants how to read and write, using the Paulo Freire literacy method, helping in the political awareness of the population. Unfortunately, Rosa, her husband Gilberto (who adopted the false name Juarez), and her 7-year-old daughter Rita are imprisoned during the dictatorship. The film tells how they were tortured and kept in inhumane situations at the hands of the military.
