About the event

New York Times bestselling author Meg Waite Clayton joins Authors! to talk about her new historical fiction novel, Typewriter Beach. Clayton is known for writing deeply researched stories about women facing major turning points in history. During the event, she will chat about her writing process, how she builds her atmospheric settings and how she brings midcentury Hollywood to life. The evening includes a 45-minute talk followed by a brief audience Q&A. Every ticket includes a copy of the book.

About the book

Typewriter Beach splits its time between 1957 and 2018, weaving a family mystery set in the coastal town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. In the 1957 storyline, young actress Isabella Giori seems close to stardom after auditioning for Alfred Hitchcock, but a studio fixer hides her away in a seaside cottage. There, she connects with her neighbor, Leo Chazan, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter blacklisted during the Red Scare. In 2018, Leo's granddaughter, Gemma, comes to town to sell the cottage and discovers a hidden safe. The contents force her to question her family's history, exploring themes of creative passion, friendship and the price of secrecy.

About the author

Meg Waite Clayton is the bestselling author of nine novels, including The Postmistress of Paris and The Last Train to London. Before turning to writing full time, she earned a law degree and was a member of the California bar, a background that helps her bring historical and legal precision to her fiction. Her work often focuses on the unique challenges women face when trying to establish themselves in male-dominated industries. Clayton lives and writes in Carmel, California.
