Just One Bed: The Tropification of Romance

From "there's only one bed" to "who did this to you?," tropes have become synonymous with the romance genre. Join Jo Segura and panelists in a discussion about how tropes inform the books they write.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Jo Segura is a USA Today bestselling author of adventure romcoms and contemporary romance. Her stories feature strong, passionate heroines and the swoon-worthy heroes who love them. Jo’s books draw upon aspects of her life, such as her Mexican heritage and her fascination with archaeology. Now living in the Pacific Northwest, Jo is a Toledo native, and the Toledo Library will always hold a special place in her heart.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Meghan Monarch is a multi-genre indie romance author writing flutter-worthy love stories. She loves athleisure wear, movie theaters, dancing, obsessing over her favorite fandoms, loud music, and even louder laughter. She writes from her Michigan home, where she lives with her dog, Finnick—a super cool standard poodle with a colored mohawk.

Belinda Kroll writes and illustrates cozy fantasy romances where Jane Austen vocabulary meets modern sass—and he always falls first. She lives in Ohio with her family, cat, and increasing collection of Sailor Moon memorabilia. 

Kelly Ohlert is a contemporary romance author. She’s a lifelong avid reader of all genres, and as a busy mom has an enthusiastic appreciation for audio books and multi-tasking.

Angela Seals is a coffee loving writer of sexy, romantic suspense and rom-coms, while the edgy, unapologetic characters produced by red lipstick wearing Angel de’ Amor refuse to be contained in their fiery romance stories. By writing under both pen names, she offers her readers a variety of stories filled with temptation and forbidden love affairs, eager to find out who will get their story next.

Sensory Considerations: This program will use artificial lighting. All speakers will use microphones.

Accessibility Details: Located on the first floor, accessed by elevator and/or stairs. All doors will feature an automatic function or be propped open prior to program start. Tile or low pile carpet throughout the building. Limited free parking is available in the attached garage.
